The Best Funky Rock Anywhere

The Daily Walk with Love, April 27, 2018, by Paul Evans. Video is War – The World Is a Ghetto (Full Album), which basically has five longish songs, but these include “The Cisco Kind” and “The World is a Ghetto,” which are absolute classics. © United Artists Records, fair use claimed. A word about the “theme” of this album, “the world is a ghetto:” It’s hard to know what to make of the statistics today, it depends on the source, and what statistics you look at. In terms of poverty in the world, according to one source, the number of people in the world without access to clean drinking water has increased to 2 billion people. This is partly the result of the “desertification” or regions such as sub-Saharan Africa. On the other hand, I am led to believe that perhaps the number of people in the world living in extreme poverty is actually going down. In 2000 there were 1.6 billion people living in bad poverty whereas now there are 1.2 billion people living that way. Frankly, in terms of the suffering I am aware of and the explosion of terrorism, for whom poverty is a great recruiting tool, I tend to believe we might be barely holding our own. I do hope and pray, like U2 said, that “God will send his angels” (YouTube) and make it all right, before we blow ourselves up in some nuclear holocaust.

See for example, Eric Burdon – Devil And Jesus (Official Lyric Video), YouTube playlist. I hope we all also enjoy a great “Eric Burdon Declares War” playlist and perhaps even learn a thing or two below about classic rock history. Eric Burdon, who was the lead singer/songwriter both with The Animals and later for War, was a terribly gifted singer/songwriter and a very good man I greatly admire. He was the moving force and songwriter for the Animals and also the group called War, both of which are important in rock history. The featured photograph celebrating rock music and one very cool singer is a photograph of Eric Burdon courtesy of Ultimate Classic Rock.

See our earlier post, Mix: Eric Burdon and the Animals 2011 HD ♫♥50 years, The Daily Walk with Miracles, April 20, 2017, 26 song playlist. If you listen to the “Eric Burdon Declares War” album (link below) and then that performance from 2011, you will get a good feel for the man, what a truly great performer he was and what a good heart he had. Eric Burdon Declares War has two of his biggest hits, “Tobacco Road” and “Spill the Wine.”

Wikipedia summarizes the strong contribution of the band War as follows:

War (originally called Eric Burdon and War) is an American funk band from Long Beach, California, known for the hit songs “Spill the Wine”, “The World Is a Ghetto”, “The Cisco Kid”, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”, “Low Rider”, and “Summer”. Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, and reggae. Their album The World Is a Ghetto was the best-selling album of 1973. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. War was also subject to many line-up changes over the course of its formation, leaving member Leroy “Lonnie” Jordan as the only original member in the current line-up; four other members created a new group called the Lowrider Band.

At The Height of their popularity: Eric Burdon and War toured extensively across Europe and the United States. A reviewer from New Musical Express called War “the best live band I ever saw” after their first UK gig in London’s Hyde Park. Their show at Ronnie Scott’s Club in London on September 18, 1970 is historically notable for being the very last public performance for Jimi Hendrix, who joined them onstage for the last 35 minutes of Burdon’s & War’s 2nd set; a day later he was dead. A second Eric Burdon and War album, a two-disc set titled The Black-Man’s Burdon was released in 1970, before Burdon left the band in the middle of its European tour. They finished the tour without him and returned to record their first album as War.

Please also feel encouraged to read what Wikipedia has to say about the long and inspiring musical history of Eric Burdon. For those who are unfamiliar with Eric Burdon and his more famous association with the band War, you might want to watch a cool Mix or playlist based on the hit song Spill the Wine.

Please feel encouraged to visit Eric Burdon – Declares War (1970), which is a really classic recording.
