Lithium Batteries:
“The Curse of White Oil”

The Truthful Patriot’s Corner (Home page and blog), December 11, 2020, by Paul Evans. We provide summaries of good articles on the environmental cost of lithium batteries from Wired, Forbes and The Guardian. With all the negative news in the press in recent days, it’s too bad, but we must still address environmental degradation at fundamental levels. The spiraling environmental cost of our lithium battery addiction, August 5, 2018, by Amit Katwala” “As the world scrambles to replace fossil fuels with clean energy, the environmental impact of finding all the lithium required could become a major issue in its own right.”

Environmental Implications Of Lead-Acid And Lithium-Ion Batteries, January 19, 2020, by Robert Rapier:

In the 20th century, leaded gasoline and lead-based paints were extensively disseminated in the environment. Today those sources have largely been eliminated. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), today around 85% of the world’s lead consumption is for the production of lead-acid batteries.

“…Recycling is the Achilles heel of lithium-ion batteries. They stressed that while lead-acid batteries are 99% recyclable, lithium-ion batteries are recycled at a rate below 5%.” Theoretically, however, lithium-ion batteries are highly recyclable, at a close to 100 percent rate. “Some companies already claim a 50 percent rate,” and up to 80 percent of auto cells can be reused in “home applications such as home energy storage.”

The curse of ‘white oil’: electric vehicles’ dirty secret, The Guardian, December 8, 2020, by Oliver Balch: “The race is on to find a steady source of lithium, a key component in rechargeable electric car batteries. But while the EU focuses on emissions, the lithium gold rush threatens environmental damage on an industrial scale.”
