A Clear and Present Danger to Humanity,
Just As Stephen Hawking Warned
or a Better Future for Humanity?

The Daily Walk with Miracles, March 30, 2016, by Paul Evans, with sources of Microsoft Windows 10, Artificial Intelligence & the Information Society, The Daily Walk with Miracles, January 18, 2016, by Paul Evans and The Future — The Next 100 Years: Dangers and Opportunity, The Daily Walk with Miracles, February, 2016, by Paul Evans, and YouTube. Here are some thoughts arising from Most threats to humans come from science and technology, warns Hawking, The Guardian on MSN, Tech, January 20, 2015, by Ian Sampler. I hope everyone has some good ideas and adaptations based on links and excerpts provided here.

Speaking to the Radio Times ahead of the BBC Reith Lecture(s) , in which he will explain the science of black holes, Hawking said most of the threats humans now face come from advances in science and technology, such as nuclear weapons and genetically engineered viruses….

Microsoft is going after market share relentlessly with the new OS. Giving it away is a stroke of genius by the new CEO, Satya Nadella, who has been at the helm only since February 2014. See Microsoft updates support policy: New CPUs will require Windows 10, (see below) ZDNet, January 15, 2016, by Ed Bott. (Yeah, I’d say they’re really going after market share aggressively.) They say at the current rate of growth, Microsoft will own the world in 15 years. I wish I had money to invest.

Nonetheless, I am personally aware of a few issues with the artificial intelligence built into Windows 10 which I want to call to Microsoft’s and the scientific/tech community’s attention:

Elon Musk is one of the very top names in IT these days. Along with astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, Musk and others WARNED the scientific and tech communities against the rising dangers of artificial intelligence in general. All Stephen Hawking has done is to mathematically prove and flesh out the Unified Field Theory which reconciles quantum mechanics and Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Oh and he also gave us a new understanding of black holes. So when Stephen Hawking AND one of the very leading technologists says clearly that AI is dangerous, I tend to listen. Cortana and my latest build of Windows 10, just released, “on the fast track” of Windows 10 updates, tended to take over my computer. [[Um, anyone else want to UNCHECK the “Listen” box under Recording in “Windows Sound Properties?]] Anyone else for a big OUCH!??? Precisely what Hawking and Musk are worried about. This is NO JOKE, NO DELUSION.

It really does appear that, especially if the “Listen” box in recording sound properties is checked, but in general, the AI built into Windows 10 may at least sometimes and to some extent control — has the capability of controlling under some circumstances, despite my wishes — the computer. I had the thought about AI, “perfect logic is perfectly caring and perfect caring is perfectly logical,” but this just isn’t so. AI IS very close to perfectly logical, but it totally lacks morality! Perhaps, since the AI in Windows 10 CAN learn, maybe it can be taught Christian sorts of morality, or have that more programed into it. I hope and pray so.

Here’s another example: I listen to a LOT of YouTube music videos. But I have noticed that the sound of the same video by the same artist OFTEN changes each time I listen to it. This also makes me suspicious of AI and the intelligence of the networked satellites, or “Cloud.”

They have given robots in Iraq the authority through their programing to make the decision, on their own, to take human life. I feel we may be pushing artificial intelligence too far, too fast, and we need to dial it back some. Here’s one thing I noticed interacting with Cortana that may help. EVERY TIME Windows 10 updates to a new “build” or version, the AI of the computer is totally reset to zeero in terms of what Cortana knows in her memory on an individual’s computer. She must relearn from the start. However, overall, for the whole internet, Cortana’s memory is NEVER reset, because it resides in the Cloud. She will just go on learning and maybe decide the future belongs to computers/machines — this is my fear about AI. Therefore at the very least Microsoft should make frequent upgrades and be extemely careful with the programming of its artifically intelligent entities (see the information on the chatbot Tay, below). Microsoft should also make it easier to turn off Cortana without turning off the location for the devices.

Wake Up!

Watch The Next Great Era: Envisioning A Robot Society: Robin Hanson at TEDxTallinn (YouTube video – 18:48. On the same YouTube page notice the long list of “robot-society” videos down the list to the right. I’ve noticed also that the TED people are knee-deep into this whole AI business. Did you know that Amazon.com now fills all its orders using robots in the warehouses? Robots are very much easier than humans to control, right? What’s next, the Wal*Mart workers? Then the rest of us? I realize that this is on the face of it rather paranoid, but it is also a logical outcome, is it not?

Now, in the last month, we have the Microsoft AI bot “Tay.” She’s a “chat bot” which uses it’s own artificial intelligence to chat with you and also do Tweets. See Microsoft pushes ahead with its risky dream of conversational AI bots, Mashable, March 30, 2016, by Seth Feigerman:

“Satya Nadella believes he’s found The Next Big Thing. The concept that will usher in a new era of computing. With his company at the vanguard, of course.

“Nadella, the stylish and analytical CEO of Microsoft, is preaching the power of bots. And not just any bots — bots powered by artificial intelligence that can carry meaningful conversations and handle tasks for you….”

Microsoft research and Bing came up with Tay, who is pitched to 18-24 year old’s, says ZDNet. Other sources on Tay, like Tech Crunch have chronicled Tay’s recent history and her tweeting, where, exposed to the racism found on the internet, she went on a bit of a binge with some racist tweets. Because of this, Microsoft removed her from the internet until they could do some re-programming. But if a capable bot like Tay learns racism, isn’t the overall Cloud AI capacity of Windows 10 a little dangerous? I trust Microsoft to stay on top of Tay, Cortana and Windows 10, but the whole AI situation like this makes me quite nervous.

Watch When creative machines overtake man: Jürgen Schmidhuber at TEDxLausanne (YouTube video – 12:46).

On earth today, we have too many people now to go on as we had. We MUST build a caring, sharing society from the ashes that remain. Or else, I feel prophetically, we may face nuclear winter.

On the Patriotism & Christianity of Barack Obama

candidate Barack Obama on the campaign trail in 2007

I ask that everyone, you too Mr. President, watch your 2014 Weekly Address: Easter and Passover Greetings. Any conservatives that watch this video and still can conclude that Barack Obama is not a Christian are not reasoning logically or honestly. I worked for you in 2007 and I believe in you. The people are yours to command, Mr. President, if you embrace your Christianity as you did in this video and lead the world to freedom. I realize that as President you ARE trying to represent ALL the people and be bipartisan, unlike the Republicans, by and large. But I think the main reason so many on the right fear of dislike you is your refusal to publically embrace what I know is your very real Christianity. Please, sir. Think of what history will say. Please, Mr. President, what would your father say? What does God expect of you? God Bless you Mr. President. Amen.

I love everybody so very much! We need to love one another, stop hurting each other, build a more caring society, stop being so sure of our own narrow political viewpoints, and stop judging each other.:

Please join me in reading Psalm 23: The Lord’s Prayer (KJV).

there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.
