The Daily Walk with Miracles, July 12, 2020, by Paul Evans, with Dan Hershberger. Video playlist is a mix based on Golden earring – Twilight zone. Featured Golden Earring photograph of “the dancing spies” courtesy of Daily Motion. Dedicated to the goodness of the universe some call YWH, who has kept me going thus far through a few unpleasant scrapes and some good times, too. Ladies, I remain “single and wishing,” a kind, gentle and peace-loving guy I bet you’d really like. Email Paul at email@example.com.
“Twilight Zone” in my favorite video version of it leads off this playlist, while “Radar Love” follows closely on as the third song of the playlist (I think). Golden Earring is one of the few Dutch bands to make it really big. Wikipedia has a nice summary of the band:
Golden Earring is a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Golden Earrings (the definite article was dropped in 1967, while the “s” was dropped in 1969). They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs “Radar Love” in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the UK and went to number thirteen on the US charts, “Twilight Zone” in 1982, and “When the Lady Smiles” in 1984. During their career they had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts; over the years they produced 25 studio albums.
The band’s line-up consists of co-founders Rinus Gerritsen (bass and keyboards) and George Kooymans (vocals and guitar), along with Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute and saxophone), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums and percussion). All musicians in the present lineup of the band have been continuous members of the band since 1970, although other musicians have joined and left the band during the intervening years.
Along the lines of the theme of espionage of our lead song, see our own Foreigner – Agent Provocateur 1984, from November 28, 2016. I don’t know about you, but I really love the whole theme and subject. Nothing hits the spot like some good “private eye” or espionage-themed music.
As to the great included and leading video version of Twilight Zone, Wikipedia summarizes the song:
“Twilight Zone” is a 1982 hit by Dutch band Golden Earring. It was written by the band’s guitarist George Kooymans, who got the inspiration from a book by Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity. “Twilight Zone” appears on their 1982 album Cut and pays tribute to the 1960s television series The Twilight Zone. It spent more than half a year (27 weeks) on the U.S. Pop charts. It was the group’s sole Top 10 Pop single on the US Billboard Hot 100 and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Album Tracks chart, the band’s only No. 1 hit in America.
Please feel encouraged to find out more at Golden Earring’s Official Facebook page (warning: it’s partly in Dutch!!) or catch the latest on Twitter. Discogs also has a very nice short summary of the band in which they claim the band was actually formed in 1961 as “The Tornados,” and only changed their name to the singular “Golden Earring” in 1969. If you really like their music, check out such albums available from Amazon.com as digital rights free mp3’s such as Golden Earring’s Greatest Hits or their biggest selling album Cut, either of which cost $7.12 for the digital download or even cheaper is their also great album Moontan ($5.34). Even better, Amazon keeps track of your orders in their My Account- digital orders, and you will always be able to download your purchases, which is a fundamental requirement for computer geeks like me who keep changing the operating system on their PC.
The earliest Golden Earring I have found on YouTube is Golden Earring – Golden Earring 1970 (full album), YouTube – 40:05.
